I absolutely love good customer service. As a consumer, it leaves me happy, fulfilled and generally pleased with my purchase/interaction. I can understand why companies try and drill messages into their employees ‘The customer is always right’, ‘Always go the extra mile’, etc, etc. Anyone who has worked anywhere knows the rules.
The most striking customer service is when you speak to someone who is happy at their work. Someone who is satisfied with their lot, happy with themselves and happy to be earning a crust the way they do. That shines through, and the level of customer service you get is exceptional, their own persona is contagious. You can’t help but get that warm fuzzy feeling inside that I so often rant on about.
I’m not just talking about the artisans among us who are living their dream, or the lucrative business owners. Some people are just happy at work, no matter what their vocation is at that time, and no matter how far away from their future aspirations their current role is. How cool is that? I guess it comes down to gratitude and being thankful for what we have (yeah, your job might be regarded as crappy but to an unemployed person its A JOB). It also comes down to personality. If you are happy person, then share the happiness. You have to spend your time in work, so you might as well spend it being you: A cheery wee soul who infects other people with happiness and can’t help but let their good nature shine through in the guise of ‘customer service’.
